Death Note 31 - Enter the Shadow King

In Episode 31, Light continues to be a stupid douchebag. It didn’t occur to him that Near - who’s supposed to be a genius, remember - might do something smart to get out of the oh-so-clever (and not a bit obvious) trap that’s been laid. Once upon a time, I defended Light for being a smart kid. He’s made an asshole out of me, for sure.

Skipping over Light’s shame right to the aftermath brings us to a conversation with Near as he continues to sow seeds of doubt among the team. He also looks like more of a moron than usual, which I admit surprised me. Oh, Death Note! Keeping me on my toes!

Light stresses over what to do with the Death Note. Misa squeals like a banshee and is generally annoying. Aizawa (I miss the afro), after a dumb scene with his kid that’s probably supposed to be inspirational, goes outside and calls Near back to give him some intel. When Light finds out later he acts sweet and innocent, all but giggling like a school girl.

But it gets better. How? They bring back the dice! Oh thank goodness! I was thinking how much better this episode would be if they returned to that ridiculous metaphor! But, seriously, hats off to the production team for making the bad metaphor even worse. How did they do it? Near has a special die, it’s black. With a skull on it. I wish I was kidding.

Mogi and Aizawa head to Light’s apartment to search for Clues. Because if Light was Kira, he’d probably have a banner or something hung on the wall announcing it. Instead they get Misa in Super Whore Mode, parading around the house like an out of work stripper and chattering like a chipmunk. See? I can dabble in stupid metaphors (ok, similes), too.

Meanwhile, the person who Light passed off the Death Note to kills Demegawa and the other Kirapostles. This was the best part of the episode, partly because there was actually something happening finally, and partly because it’s Kyouya. Sure, he’s lost the glasses (a shame), and his hair is a little longer, but it’s clearly him. OK, you got me, it’s not the character Kyouya but it is the seiyuu.

I’m excited for Mikami. His style of writing in the notebook - standing up, jumping around, sliding across the floor - makes Light look like a kitty cat. It’s hilarious and I love it.
But, because the episode can’t end on such a positive note, Light goes ahead and explains everything to us. Remember, we’re dumb viewers, incapable of keeping up.

Next time: High-heeled boots? A hotel room? Somebody’s getting laid. Definitely.

Heh, I love the well-versed sarcasm in these DN entries. It’s probably what a lot of us are thinking.
