Oh my God, the symbolism! What could it mean?!

I’ve gotten behind in my blogging (graduation made me so lazy), but not in my frustration with Death Note. Originally I thought ep 25 would be the only one that sucked so hard. How wrong I was. Not many episodes left and I keep hoping something will change to redeem itself, but I just don’t see that happening. Where once I was bright-eyed and adoring, I have grown cynical and jaded. You did this to me, Death Note! Damn you!

Death Note 29 - Daddy issues, among others

Forecast: shitty.

Compared to recent episodes, I have relatively little things to complain about this time around. Things were less ridiculous in episode 29, though the series seems to have lost its old “oompf” (I just don’t think I can ever get excited for Mello and Near). I’ll even pay the production team a compliment: they have done a decent job of making Light look older. Even if he does look sort of lopsided in most scenes, like his head isn’t entirely symmetrical.

OK, so it was a qualified compliment, but whatever. I tried.

Darker than BLACK 04 - With friends like these…

You are getting sleeeeeepy...

Episode 4 introduces us to a new “breed” of supernatural being, a contractor in moratorium. At first this really confused me because I was thinking “moratorium” as in the actual English word (n., “a suspension of an ongoing or planned activity”). But in the DtB universe this actually means a sort of contractor-esque being without self-control. They’re a bit like the bratty teenagers of the supernatural group, acting on impulse and being very emotional. Maybe they need to suspend being like that.

Anyhow, our girl Mai is one such being.

...And then the world exploded. The End!

This episode employs a couple interesting devices that I haven’t seen from Moonlight Mile before and, frankly, that I didn’t expect it to employ in the first place. Was it entirely successful? Well, I dunno about that. But it’s nice to see them trying something different.

Emma, you came back! And you brought friends!

There was much waving of hands and girlish squealing when I found out that there would be a second season of Emma and even moreso throughout the entire first episode. (Technically first two episodes, but episode 00 is mostly a recap.) I’m excited beyond belief to get to watch these characters once again. Pardon my giddiness as we explore “A New House.”

Death Note 27/28 - A double dose of suck

Wait, what is this show about again?

In the interest of getting caught up, I’ve opted to make this a double entry. Don’t worry, there was more than enough material to find fault with in each episode. Really they should both probably have had their own, but…I’ve fallen behind and it’s lonely back here.

That's kinda how I feel, too.

I think the production team was in mourning over having to kill off L, so the first half of episode 26 was a big recap. You know, in case we hadn’t been watching the series up until this point. I’m sure there were a lot of people who thought, “I don’t really care for that L guy. I don’t think I’ll watch until he dies.” Good job, team.

I'd be able to see the moon if there wasn't all that shit in the way.

Last week Moonlight Mile introduced us to its own brand of manliness. Today we’re going a different route. This episode was stained brown with shit, both literal and metaphorical, both in the production decisions and the characters we met. It’s a cornucopia of scatological treasure.

Kid, I sympathize.

You can get an idea of how bad my connection is by how long it’s taken me to download and watch this episode. I’m only, what? Three weeks behind?

Anyway.

Since the Internet has basically turned into one big celebratory jerk-off session for Death Note, I thought I’d play Devil’s Advocate - and let out some of my own frustration - by focusing, instead, on what’s wrong with the series*, starting with the complete failure known as episode 25, “Silence.”

*Besides the OP and ED, which still make me bleed from the eyes and ears.

Wow, hounddog - you ARE dumb!

I’ve decided to take blogging a little less seriously. Not “less seriously” in the sense that this whole thing is a big joke. What I mean is, there are lots of other great blogs where you could easily find an awesome summary of the latest episode of whatever (I flatter myself by assuming anyone but me reads this) and because of my terrible internet connection and general lack of time lately, my big summaries come out really late, so what’s the point? Instead, I’ll try to offer some commentary and work through some issues. And I’ll do a lot of stating the obvious, because I’m just that slow.

…Starting with DtB03. Come along, won’t you?
